What we think about it:
theyahd - "Another drone meeting that could have been a text message."
el_pinata - "I was going to say, it's a shame we don't all have a device in our pockets/hands that's constantly connected to the internet."
SpecialNose9325 - "You dont even need internet. Theres literally a warning system built that can ping any phone on any network, and is controlled by the National Guard to warn you about cyclones and tornados."
Mindestiny - "I feel like a lot of people here are missing the point. Not everyone living in NYC is a multimillionaire socialite, there's a lot of poverty in NYC, especially in the boroughs that aren't Manhattan. In an emergency, the poor people, the homeless people, and anyone else without a cell phone needs to be notified too."
Couratious - "Even the homeless have cell phones now. If you don't believe me go to a local shelter."
RSomnambulist - "Sirens are incredibly affordable and have been a viable use for this for 200 years. There may be edge cases, but this feels like a huge waste of money for most cases."
TheAtomicRatonga - "Problem is most people ignore sirens"
RSomnambulist - "I feel like a drone is easier to ignore unless they're planning on divebombing your house with the thing."
Mindestiny - "Not really, a drone flying overhead pumping out a loud audible message about an emergency is something that definitely stands out as unique and people take notice of. And I'm not sure what Darwin has to do with alerting people without cell phones about major emergencies."
RSomnambulist - "New York should have an air quality siren, along with others, which would be louder, faster, cheaper, and less silly to deploy. If someone wants to sit outside anyway, as in the post I was replying to about ignoring sirens, then that is their prerogative. Flying drones around the city only makes sense if the issue is so highly localized that a drone would be necessary to avoid alerting other nearby districts, but that feels like a real stretch."
RevivedMisanthropy - "Nobody asked for this."
dadefresh - "The only time I see them do anything is when they write tickets to delivery bikers on 1st Ave and 59th St."
RevivedMisanthropy - "They won't even write tickets for delivery drivers riding on mopeds on the sidewalk in my neighborhood. Would really appreciate the most basic level of traffic enforcement."
jakl8811 - "If they enforce that, those people will say “don’t they have actual crimes to solve” - there’s no winning"
allthecats - "Hey, don’t say that, I was on the train yesterday and saw a cop beat level 389 in Candy Crush"
zxyzyxz - "Nobody asked for this."
kwalshyall - "Eric Adams welcomes you to City 17"
Nightchade - "Stationary speakers/antenna setups would be:"
Kosm05 - "Speaker company probably doesn’t do financial kick backs to the police union and mayor"
