ballsoutofthebathtub - "This computer component market is wild. From the ridiculous price of GPUs a year or two ago, to a complete collapse in price of these."

irrealewunsche - "Yep, I just bought a 4TB Crucial drive for 200€! It replaced my Steam spinning disk."

DurinsBane20 - "The crucial probably lacks dram"

irrealewunsche - "Yep, I'm pretty certain it does, but for media or Steam it seems to be perfect."

FILTER_OUT_T_D - "I was able to finally ditch all my old storage HDDs recently and it was an amazing feeling. Copied like 4 drives’ worth of data onto a single m.2 and took out the old drives. My tower feels like it’s 10 pounds lighter."

TheMSensation - "you should probably buy a 2nd m.2...."

FILTER_OUT_T_D - "I have 2 other SSDs in my box I also use for storage. It was just the HDDs I removed."

GravityReject - "Too bad my mobo only has one m.2 slot"

goodnames679 - "They have M.2 expansion cards you can slot into a PCIe slot if you need to add more storage in the future. :)"

MrGooseHerder - "I put all my eggs in one basket known for having the bottom fall out in a few years..."

ballsoutofthebathtub - "Yeah at these prices it’s hard to justify spinning hard drives. For video work slow external hdds we’re a necessary evil as they had the capacity at a low price. They’re only really useful as backups though as they’re not fast enough to work from due to the beefy codecs. If you can pay a bit more you can now get the same capacity at like 10x the speed lol."

chachilongshot - "For some cases spinning disks still make sense. I have a large media library, access speed isn't important as HDDs can keep up fine, but I need as much space as possible. Until 16tb SSDs are under $250, HDDs are still a much cheaper option."

ballsoutofthebathtub - "That’s fair. It’s just for my needs I can only work off them if they’re in a RAID. SSDs being 4TB has been a godsend."

goodnames679 - "Sure, but the number of applications that immense storage and also don’t care even a little about read/write speed are pretty minimal. Most of the time you need to write many terabytes of data, you also would want to be able to open large files quickly."

chachilongshot - "I'm not talking about using HDDs for applications though, just in a NAS for bulk storage. I use NVME drives for my desktop, but for my media storage there's no benefit. Having a Plex cache on an SSD helps, which is how mine's setup, but solid state storage still has a ways to go to catchup to the cost of spinning disks. For me, I would need to replace my NAS to be able to support M.2 drives as well, so the cost to upgrade would be even more significant. If you're building a setup for the first time it could be more worth while."

pinkynarftroz - "Video work still uses spinning disks because nobody is editing with the beefy codecs anyway. It's always Prores or DnxHD proxies, especially on major productions with lots of footage. Capacity is more important than speed since even the worst spinning disks keep up with the proxies."

ballsoutofthebathtub - "That respectfully, is bullshit. My Alexa shoots 4K prores 4444 (which I count as a beefy codec) and my workflow is proxy-less and I cut off a large SSD."

pinkynarftroz - "That is not how it's done on a mid to large film or TV show. In television, you have multiple editors and assistants all working from a nexus. 4K Prores4444 is unreasonable to stream over a network to that many people. Likewise features have shared setups with many people working, particularly previs visual effects. Further, dailies from the vendor are typically delivered online, and it's much easier to upload/download 30GB of Dnx36 in the morning versus the 2TB that came off the camera."

ObiWanCanShowMe - "Just so you know, my Samsung black SSD died, I could not do anything with it, I could see all the data, could not save, copy anything. They just "stop" working. Get a backup."
